Replacing a Stolen Mailbox With a Steel Post and Locking Mailbox

For this project, the homeowner’s existing mailbox had actually been torn off and stolen directly from the top of their wooden 4x4 mailbox post. The original setup simply wasn’t secure, and after the theft, the homeowner wanted something substantially more secure and durable.

We discussed replacing the entire setup with steel mailbox post and a high-security locking mailbox designed to better resist theft and vandalism.

Why We Use Heavy-Duty Steel Mailbox Posts

If you’ve watched our installation videos or followed our previous projects, you’ve probably noticed that we install heavy-duty steel mailbox posts instead of traditional wood posts.

There’s a reason for that.

A quality locking mailbox is significantly heavier than a standard lightweight mailbox. Many locking mailboxes weigh around 30 pounds before mail or packages are even added inside. Once you begin mounting multiple mailboxes onto a single post, the stress on the structure increases even more.

Over time, wood posts can:

  • Warp
  • Twist
  • Sag
  • Crack
  • Rot from moisture exposure
  • Loosen around screws or mounting hardware

Steel posts have their own wear characteristics over decades, but properly coated and maintained steel generally lasts far longer in outdoor environments than untreated wood.

In many climates, a standard wood mailbox post may begin showing deterioration within years depending on moisture exposure and installation quality. A properly constructed steel post can often remain structurally sound for several decades with minimal maintenance.

Removing the Existing Mailbox Post

To begin the installation, I removed the damaged wooden mailbox post and its concrete footing from the ground.

Using a tow strap attached to my truck, I carefully extracted the existing post assembly to fully clear the site for the new installation.

Once the old post and concrete were removed, I prepared the area for the new reinforced mailbox post.

Installing the New Steel Mailbox Post

The new heavy-duty steel post was installed and secured in concrete to create a stronger permanent foundation.

Allowing the concrete to properly cure is one of the most important steps in creating a stable mailbox installation. The strength of the foundation directly impacts how well the mailbox holds up over time against weather, vibration, and attempted theft or damage.

Once the post was fully secured, I mounted a Mail Boss Mail Manager Pro high-security locking mailbox to complete the installation.
