Replacing a Leaning Mailbox on a Busy Road With a High-Security Locking Mailbox
Mailbox security becomes a much bigger concern when your mailbox sits along a busy roadway.
For this project, the homeowner wanted to upgrade to a high-security locking mailbox to better protect their mail and small packages from theft. At the same time, they wanted a mailbox setup that looked cleaner and better matched the overall aesthetic of their home.
The original setup had started leaning over time, and mounted on top was a lightweight non-locking mailbox.
Removing the Existing Mailbox and Post
To begin the installation, I removed the existing mailbox and mailbox post.
Like many installations, the post had originally been set into concrete below grade. Once the post itself was removed, the existing concrete footing was still buried beneath the surface.
Removing old mailbox foundations is one of the more time-consuming parts of many mailbox replacements. Even when the visible portion of the installation looks simple, there’s often a substantial amount of buried concrete holding the post in place underground.
To remove the existing footing, I used a pick axe and shovel to break up and excavate the old concrete from the site.
Once the original setup was completely removed, the area was ready for the new installation.
Installing a Heavy-Duty Steel Mailbox Post
For the replacement, the homeowner wanted something that felt significantly more solid and permanent than the original setup.
I installed a new heavy-duty steel mailbox post followed by a Mail Boss Mail Manager Pro high-security locking mailbox.
One of the biggest differences homeowners notice immediately after upgrading from a lightweight mailbox setup is how much more rigid and substantial the installation feels. Reinforced steel posts provide far better long-term support for heavier locking mailboxes compared to aging wood or lightweight posts.
That added rigidity becomes especially important on busy roads where mailbox installations are exposed to:
- Constant vibration from traffic
- Wind exposure
- Weather
- Accidental impacts
- Daily use over many years

What started as:

became:
