Replacing a Damaged Mailbox With a Reinforced Steel Post and Locking Mailbox

Sometimes you can tell a mailbox setup has reached the end of its life the moment you pull up to the property.

For this installation, the homeowner’s mailbox had previously been backed into by a vehicle and never properly repaired afterward. The mailbox itself was barely attached to the post, and over time the entire setup had become unstable enough that the homeowners were using roughly 10-pounds of rock inside the mailbox just to help keep it balanced and sitting in position.

It technically worked, but only barely.

The homeowners wanted to replace the entire setup with something substantially more secure, durable, and permanent.

Removing the Existing Mailbox and Post

To begin the installation, I removed the damaged mailbox and existing mailbox post.

The old post had originally been mounted using a slip-fit style installation attached to a concrete footing below grade. After removing the post itself, the remaining concrete base was left sitting flush with the surrounding ground surface.

This type of removal can sometimes be more difficult because there isn’t enough exposed concrete above ground to simply pull the footing directly out.

Extracting the Existing Concrete Footing

To remove the remaining footing, I first chipped around the perimeter of the buried concrete using a pick axe to loosen the surrounding soil.

Once enough of the footing was exposed, I wrapped a tow strap securely around the concrete base and carefully extracted it from the ground using my truck and tow hitch.

Installing a New Heavy-Duty Steel Mailbox Post

After the old setup was fully removed, I prepared the site for the new installation.

For the replacement, the homeowner chose the products we proposed for the job, a heavy-duty steel mailbox post paired with a Mail Boss Mail Manager Pro high-security locking mailbox.

One of the biggest advantages of steel mailbox posts is long-term rigidity and durability. Unlike wood, reinforced steel posts are designed to better support the additional weight of heavy-duty locking mailboxes over time.

Once the new post was securely installed and set in concrete, I mounted the Mail Boss Mail Manager Pro mailbox to complete the installation.

The Finished Result

The final result completely transformed the original installation.

What was previously a damaged mailbox being held in place with a rock became:

  • A reinforced steel mailbox installation
  • A new concrete-mounted foundation
  • A permanently mounted locking mailbox
  • A cleaner and more durable setup built for long-term use
